“Topography of a Bird” is a compilation of 14 songs written and performed by singer/songwriter, Mark Rice. It began production in the spring of 2007 and was anticipated by many long before that. The first sessions began in the newly built studio in Young’s basement which was still under construction. The only track used from those sessions is the song “Tuscan Sun”. After abandoning the first session recordings, they decided to take the sessions to Mark’s apartment at the Tyler School of Art. For two days, the complex and sprawling network of cables and microphones over-ran the small living space for Mark and his understanding wife, Jaci. After those 2 productive days in October of ‘07, when they recorded 13 songs live with vocals, guitars and the cajon, they took the production back to Young’s studio, and recorded most everything else heard on the record. They did, however, return to the college dormitory apartment to record Sissy’s violin and vocals. And the beautiful grand piano heard on the tracks “Starting Ground” and “Save Me Tonight” was recorded on location at the residence of pianist, Chris LaRosa. His parents were very gracious in allowing us to invade their home for an afternoon.
All in all, “Topography of a Bird” is the largest record both Mark Rice and Dave Young have ever produced, together or individually. With 14 songs and more than an hour of music, this record was intended to be somewhat of a gift to Mark’s fans for all the many years of supporting his songwriting while waiting patiently for a full-length studio album. We expect that you’ll find “Topography of a Bird” quite inviting and a wonderful time spent with the music of Mark Rice.
